Medication safety

Home / Critical Care / Professionals / Medication safety

This group aims to share best practice between all the critical care units in Greater Manchester with respect to the supply, prescription, preparation and administration of medication in critical re care. Their main objectives are to:

  • improve medication safety in critical units in GM
  • share problems and help each other to find solutions to prevent these occurring in other critical care units
  • provide educational resources for all staff working in critical care units in GM to improve their knowledge of medication safety

Current projects include glucose management and medication concentrations; work is ongoing with the new insulin calculator devised by Dr Harris (Cons Intensivist at Salford Royal hospital) which aims to reduce the incidences of hypoglycaemia in patients who are receiving IV insulin and the group is also looking at campaign posters raising awareness of the potential life threatening cases of Euglycaemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis in patients who take the new SGLT-2 oral anti-diabetic medication.

All units have been asked to participate in an audit of standard concentrations comparing their practices against the ICS standards for concentrations
